Wine Tasting in Porto: Where to Taste Douro Wine, Not Just Port

Quick answer: the Douro makes serious red, white and rosé table wines as well as Port, and several Port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia will pour them if you ask for the right tasting. The cheapest we found is Kopke’s €20 Douro red. For the widest range in one sitting without crossing the river, a €29 city tasting pours five Douro wines and a White Port with a cheese and ham plate.

Every tasting and price below comes from the producer’s own website, checked on September 17, 2026. Grape and style facts come from the IVDP, the official regulator of Port and Douro wines.

Canto Cooking is a commercial partner of Pinot Squirrel and we earn from bookings. Winery and lodge prices on this page come from each producer's own website.

What Douro wine is

The Douro is best known for Port, but the same valley produces unfortified red, white and rosé wines labelled Douro DOC. According to the IVDP, the leading red grapes for single-varietal Douro wines are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. For whites, the regulator names Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Donzelinho, Gouveio and Rabigato.

The valley also makes three wines people rarely expect: Moscatel do Douro, a fortified white made only from Moscatel Galego; Espumante do Douro, its sparkling wine; and Colheita Tardia, a late-harvest wine.

If you already know Port, a table-wine tasting is a good way to understand the region from the other side. Many of the grapes and the schist soils are the same; the difference is that nothing stops the fermentation, so the sugar becomes alcohol and the wine is usually dry.

Which tasting to book

You want the cheapest way to try Douro red

Kopke pours its DOC São Luiz Red for €20 and the Reserve Red for €22, on the riverfront in Gaia. Both come from Quinta de São Luiz in Tabuaço, which Kopke bought in 1922 and which now makes all of its Douro wines.

You want range, food and no river crossing

The €29 city tasting above pours two vintages of Douro white, a rosé and two reds, plus a small White Port, with local cheese and Portuguese cured ham. It is the only option we found that covers white, rosé and red in one sitting, and you can stay on afterwards for more wine or tapas at extra cost.

You are travelling with a Port lover

Ferreira’s Casa Ferreirinha Visit (€23) pours three Douro DOC wines, so one of you can do that while the other does a Port visit at the same house. Burmester’s Douro Tasting (€30) mixes its white and red DOC wines with a Fine White Port and a 10 Year Old Tawny, and Poças’ Douro Experience (€25) pours its Trava-Línguas and Reserva Red with Port.

You want to taste how a wine changes year to year

Churchill’s Essential Douro Wines (€40) is a vertical of its Grafite range: a Red 2021, a White 2025, a Touriga Nacional 2019 and a Grande Reserva 2017, with a guided tour of the lodge. Its €65 Quinta da Gricha tasting follows one estate from table wine to Vintage Port.

You want to go deep

Niepoort runs one of the most wine-focused programs in Gaia: Naturally Cool (€45, five wines plus kombucha), Niepoortland (€45, four wines from all of its regions), Essentials & Camélia (€85, six to eight wines plus tea), and a 16-wine Masterclass (€200). Its Gaia space takes a maximum of 24 visitors a day.

You have a day in the Douro valley

Quinta do Vallado replanted its vineyards one variety per plot from 1993, which makes its Single-Varietal Tasting (from €50) the natural place to taste Douro grapes one at a time. Quinta de la Rosa’s €25 tour and tasting is the cheaper option, and its Passagem red and white are its Douro table wines. Sandeman’s Quinta do Seixo also has a Douro DOC Visit (€26, three wines) and a Premium Douro DOC Visit (€54, five wines).

Tips for a Douro wine tasting

  • Ask for the DOC tasting by name. At most Gaia houses the default visit ends with Port.
  • Taste white before red. Lighter wines are easier to judge before bigger ones.
  • Eat something. Tastings with cheese, ham or tapas make five or more wines far easier to compare.
  • Check the age rules. Quinta do Vallado’s tastings and the city tasting are for adults only.

Pair it with Porto's food

Both end at Canto's kitchen in central Porto: the food tour with a nata or a glass of Port, the tapas class with lunch and a glass of Douro wine.
