The short version: for most visitors, Port means Vila Nova de Gaia, the town across the river from Porto where the big houses keep their cellars. You can walk there from the city. Go up the Douro valley only if you can give it a whole day, ideally a night, because the estates are where the vineyards are, not a quick add-on to a city break.
We built this guide from each producer’s own published visits, prices and history, and from the official regulator, the IVDP. Where a house does not publish something, we say so rather than fill the gap. Prices were checked on September 17, 2026.

Two places, two kinds of visit
Vila Nova de Gaia (the lodges). Houses such as Sandeman, Taylor’s, Graham’s and Burmester age and sell their wines here. Most entry visits take 50 to 90 minutes and finish with a tasting. Niepoort, which runs one of them, says there are roughly 16 visitor centers in the Porto wine district.
The Douro valley (the quintas). Quinta means estate. Upriver, near towns such as Pinhão and Peso da Régua, you see terraced vineyards, lagares where grapes are trodden, and lodges full of young wine. Croft at Quinta da Roêda, Dow’s at Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta do Vallado and Quinta de la Rosa all welcome visitors.
What grows here, and why the landscape looks the way it does
The Douro Demarcated Region covers about 250,000 hectares, but vines grow on only about 18% of that land. According to the IVDP, around 20,000 farmers grow grapes here, with an average of 2 hectares each, so the famous names you visit are the public face of a region of smallholders.
The soils are mostly schist, with some granite around the edges, and the slopes are so steep they are shaped into terraces before planting. Phylloxera, the vine pest that devastated European vineyards, first appeared here in 1862. The region is divided into three subregions: the Baixo Corgo, which has the largest area under vine, the Cima Corgo, and the Douro Superior further east.
The red grapes the IVDP singles out are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Amarela. For whites, Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Donzelinho, Gouveio and Rabigato. Whether a Port ends up very sweet or extra dry is set by when the winemaker stops the fermentation. For what each style of Port actually is, see our guide to Port styles.
Who owns which house
Several of the best-known names belong to the same few groups, and it explains a lot about how visits are priced:
- Sogrape owns Sandeman, Ferreira and Offley. Sandeman and Ferreira sell visits at identical price steps: €23, €32, €35, €100 and €170.
- Symington Family Estates owns Cockburn’s and Dow’s, and Graham’s private boardroom tasting pours six Symington family Ports, from Graham’s, Dow’s and Warre’s.
- The Fladgate Partnership owns Taylor’s.
- Vranken-Pommery, the Champagne group, has owned Rozès since 1999.
Which house is the oldest?
You will hear several answers, and they are each house’s own. Croft dates its origin to 1588 and says it is the oldest Port house still active. Kopke calls itself the oldest Port Wine House, counting from its first shipment in 1638. Taylor’s dates itself to 1692.
The more important date may be 1756. That year Real Companhia Velha was created by royal charter, and it went on to carry out the demarcation of the Douro, which the company describes as the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Its museum of that demarcation is in Gaia.
Which visit to book
These are our picks for specific kinds of visitor, based on what each house publishes. We have not ranked houses by the quality of their wine.
Your first lodge visit, under €25
Burmester’s Prova Premium (€23) pours a Fine White, an LBV and a 10 Year Old with chocolates: three genuinely different styles, including an aged Tawny. Sandeman’s €23 visit pours a White, a Ruby and a Tawny and is the more guided introduction. Churchill’s €25 option includes a guided tour of a working lodge with its LBV 2020.
You like Tawny
Burmester’s Prova Tawny Experience pours the 10, 20 and 30 Year Old for €35. Sandeman’s Old Tawnies Visit adds a 40 Year Old for €53. For single-harvest Tawnies, Poças’ Golden Years tasting (€45) pours Colheitas from 1996 and 2005.
You want to taste old wine without spending a fortune
Poças’ Golden Years (€45) and Niepoort’s Temple visit (€45, a 50 ml pour of Garrafeira 1987, limited to 24 visitors a day) are the two standouts. Graham’s Cellar Master’s Trilogy, with Single Harvest Tawnies from 1997, 1974 and 1961, is the big-occasion version at €350.
You want to learn, not just drink
Churchill’s blind tasting (€40) and its bottle vs cask tasting (€65), and Niepoort’s Masterclass (€200, 16 wines). Taylor’s self-paced audio visit, in 13 languages, suits anyone who prefers to read and listen at their own speed.
Someone in your group does not like sweet wine
Ferreira’s Casa Ferreirinha Visit (€23) pours three Douro DOC table wines. Kopke offers tastings of its São Luiz Douro reds from €20, and Burmester’s Douro Tasting (€30) mixes DOC wines with Port.
You have one day in the Douro
Croft’s Quinta da Roêda near Pinhão has the cheapest way in, a self-guided tour from €11, and harvest-time grape treading for €60. Quinta de la Rosa’s tour and tasting costs €25. Quinta do Vallado, near Peso da Régua, has a single-varietal tasting from €50 and two wine hotels if you want to stay over.
You would rather taste several houses without crossing the river
Our partner Canto Cooking runs a one-hour tasting in central Porto that pours Sandeman, Graham’s, Taylor’s and Ferreira side by side, for €22.
Canto Cooking is a commercial partner of Pinot Squirrel and we earn from bookings. Winery and lodge prices on this page come from each producer's own website.

Practicalities
- Book ahead. Cockburn’s and Graham’s visits need a reservation, Niepoort sells timed slots, and Real Companhia Velha says reservation is mandatory.
- Read the cancellation terms. Burmester charges in full unless you cancel five working days ahead.
- Some houses do not publish prices. Taylor’s, Cockburn’s and Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim among them, and we found none for Fonseca. Email before you go if budget matters.
- Children. Burmester lets under-5s in free and charges €10 for ages 6 to 17. Quinta do Vallado’s standard tastings are for over-18s.
- Seasons. Graham’s and Cockburn’s keep longer hours from April 1 to October 31. Croft’s grape treading only runs at harvest.
- Closed days. Croft and Cockburn’s close on December 25 and January 1. Quinta da Boeira’s visitor center is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
