Poças was founded in 1918 and still works out of a century-old cellar in Gaia’s historic center, holding more than 800 casks of Colheitas and Tawnies and running its own cooperage. Its tastings reflect that cellar: fewer steps, more old wine.

- Contrasts Menu, €57: a food pairing with chef Pedro Braga and Queijaria da Praça, with a guided cellar tour. Courgette carpaccio, smoked salmon blinis and a cheese board, paired with Port and DOC Douro.
Why Golden Years is the one
A Colheita is a Tawny from a single harvest, aged in cask for at least seven years. Golden Years pours Colheitas from 1996 and 2005 next to a white Colheita from 2015 and a young 2020 Vintage. For €45 you taste how three decades in wood change a wine, and compare it with a Vintage Port that ages in bottle instead. That is a lot of age on the table for the price, and it suits a house whose cellar is full of exactly these casks.
Poças also owns vineyards in the Douro: Quinta das Quartas, which can be visited, Quinta de Santa Bárbara and Quinta Vale de Cavalos.
