Burmester began in London in 1750, when Henry Burmester went into partnership with John Nash, and went on to export Port from Gaia to Europe. The family story has one grim turn: in 1885 J. W. Burmester was swept away by a wave at Foz do Porto. The house has made Douro DOC wines since 1992 and now sells in more than 30 countries.
Why it is good value
The visit is a self-guided walk through the cellar followed by a tasting, available in Portuguese, English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Burmester publishes eight tastings, and several of them give you more range for the money than the entry tours at bigger names:
- Prova Clássica, €22: two Ports.
- Prova Premium, €23: Fine White, LBV and a 10 Year Old, with chocolates. For one euro more than the Clássica you get three distinct styles, including an aged Tawny.
- Reserva Tour, €25: Sotto Voce and Jockey Club, with almendrado and Queijo da Beira.
- Prova Exclusiva, €27: Fine White, LBV and a 20 Year Old.
- Douro Tasting, €30: Casa Burmester white and red DOC, Fine White and a 10 Year Old Tawny.
- Prova Tawny Experience, €35: the 10, 20 and 30 Year Old Tawny side by side.
- Port Wine Trilogy Senses, €35: Extra Dry, LBV and a 20 Year Old Tawny, with ovo mole, Queijo da Ilha and almendrado.
- Visita e Prova Chocolate & Queijo, €45: three Ports.
If Tawny is your style, the €35 Tawny Experience covers three ages for less than Sandeman’s €53 Old Tawnies Visit, which adds a 40 Year Old.
