Sandeman is owned by Sogrape, and it shows in the way visits are sold: six clearly named options in Vila Nova de Gaia, booked through Sogrape’s wine tourism site, rising in steps from €23 to €170. If you have never done a Port lodge visit and want to know exactly what you are paying for before you cross the river, this is the least guesswork in town.
Which visit to pick
The Porto Sandeman Visit (€23, 50 minutes) pours three Ports: a White, a Ruby and a Tawny. That is a tour of the basic styles rather than of Sandeman’s best wines, and it is the right choice if the words Ruby and Tawny still mean little to you.
If you already know you like Tawny, skip the middle steps and look at the Old Tawnies Visit (€53, 90 minutes). It pours the 10, 20, 30 and 40 Year Old side by side, in The 1790 Room, and tasting how age changes the same house style is the most useful tasting on this ladder. The Porto Sandeman Exclusive Experience (€170) moves on to Vintage Ports and old Tawnies, six wines in two and a half hours.

In the Douro: Quinta do Seixo
Sandeman also opens Quinta do Seixo, its Douro winery and vineyards, with twelve visits from a €26 tasting of three Porto wines to a €250 Harvest Special Program: six hours of picking, grape stomping, a visit, a tasting and lunch. There is a self-guided Biodiversity Trail (€29, two hours, two Porto wines) and a Picnic in the Vineyard (€95). If you are going to spend a day upriver anyway, it is worth comparing with the other Douro estates.
