Many Gaia lodges are warehouses by the river. Quinta da Boeira is a palace. It was built in 1850 by Manuel da Rocha Romariz, an emigrant who had made his money in Brazil and come home, and it sits in a three-hectare estate with trees more than a century old.
Why it still exists
In 1999 the estate was due to become a condominium development. A priest and ten friends bought it instead, specifically to protect the palace and its old trees. It was re-registered with the IVDP, the official Port and Douro wine regulator, in 2017, so it is once again a Port producer as well as a historic house.
That makes it a different kind of stop from the big names. You come here for the building, the gardens and the story, with Port as part of it, rather than for a tasting ladder. It works well as a break between the busier lodges along the river, or with visitors who are more interested in architecture and gardens than in comparing Tawny ages.
Visiting

Pairing it with another visit
Boeira is a good match for Real Companhia Velha, whose Museum of the First Demarcation tells the story of how the Douro’s boundaries were drawn in 1756. Between them you get two sides of Gaia’s history that a standard lodge tour leaves out: the rules that created the Port trade, and the fortunes it made for the families who built houses like this one.
