Ferreira tells its story through Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, whom it presents as the central figure in developing the Port business, and that story is the reason to choose it over the lodges around it. Like Sandeman, Ferreira belongs to Sogrape and is booked through Sogrape’s wine tourism site, with the same €23 / €32 / €35 / €100 / €170 price steps.
Which visit to pick
The Dona Antónia Visit (€35, 90 minutes) is the one that is specific to this house, focused on her life and work and finishing in the Dona Antónia Tasting Room. The entry-level Porto Ferreira Visit (€23, 50 minutes) pours three Porto wines.
Two options are unusual. The Casa Ferreirinha Visit (€23) pours three Douro DOC table wines instead of Port, and the Premium Douro DOC Visit (€53) pours five. If you are travelling with someone who does not like sweet wine, Ferreira has an answer for them. Ferreira also sells combined tickets with Casa da Música (€28) and with Serralves (€37.60), which make sense if you were going to those places anyway.
The Porto Vintage Visit (€55, 90 minutes) takes place in the Blue Tiles Room. Visits run in Portuguese, English, German, French, Spanish or Italian, subject to availability.
The family connection
Dona Antónia’s story runs upriver too. Quinta do Vallado, near Peso da Régua, was bought in 1818 by António Bernardo Ferreira, her uncle and father-in-law, and it is still owned by her descendants. Seeing both gives you the city and the vineyard side of the same family.
