Niepoort has been making wine since 1842, and when it opened its Gaia visitor space in 2021 it capped it at 24 visitors a day to keep it authentic. The tour passes the small lab the team calls the casinha on the way to what Niepoort calls the treasure room. Niepoort itself says there are roughly 16 visitor centers in the Porto wine district, and this one is designed to feel small.
The tastings
Every experience has a fixed time slot, so plan the rest of your day around it rather than the other way round:
- Niepoort Temple, €45, 30 minutes, 5pm in Gaia: a 50 ml sample of Niepoort Garrafeira 1987 and access to the shop.
- Naturally Cool Tasting, €45, one hour, 11am: five wines plus kombucha.
- Niepoortland, €45, one hour, 2pm: four wines from all of Niepoort’s regions.
- Niepoort Essentials & Camélia, €85, 90 minutes, 10am or 3pm: six to eight wines plus tea.
- Dirk Niepoort Favourites, €150, 90 minutes: seven wines.
- Masterclass, €200, two and a half hours: 16 wines.
The Temple is the unusual one. Thirty minutes for a single 50 ml pour sounds thin until you notice what the pour is: a Garrafeira from 1987. It is a tasting of one old wine, not a tour, and it suits someone who has already done a standard lodge visit elsewhere.
Beyond Gaia
Niepoort also lists a Douro experience with lunch (€85, two and a half hours, four wines, 1pm; under 7 free, and half price at €42.50 from age 7) and a barrel tasting with a vineyard visit (€120, 90 minutes, Fridays at 3pm). Confirm where each takes place when you book.
