Quinta do Vallado was built in 1716 on the Corgo river near where it meets the Douro, by Peso da Régua. In 1818 it was bought by António Bernardo Ferreira, the uncle and father-in-law of Dona Antónia Ferreira, and it is still owned by her descendants. If you visit Ferreira in Gaia, this is the vineyard half of the same family story.
One grape per plot
From 1993 Vallado replanted one variety per plot, breaking with the Douro tradition of field blends, where different grapes grow mixed together in the same vineyard. It still has 10 hectares of old vines planted between the 1920s and the 1950s, including Vinha da Granja from 1929, and it has planted 35 organic hectares at Quinta do Orgal in Vila Nova de Foz Côa since 2009.
That is why the Single-Varietal Tasting is the one we would pick here: an estate that separated its grapes on purpose is the place to taste them one at a time.

Staying over
Vallado runs two hotels: the Quinta do Vallado Wine Hotel in the Douro and Casa do Rio Wine Hotel in the Douro Superior. Hotel guests get a daily winery and cellar tour, picnics can be arranged, and there are jeep tours at Casa do Rio, booked 24 hours ahead. A night here turns a rushed day trip into a proper visit.
Back in Porto, a Vallado 20 Year Old Tawny is the optional upgrade on one of our partner’s city tastings, if you want to taste the estate without the drive:
