Taylor’s dates itself to 1692 and is part of The Fladgate Partnership. It says it is dedicated entirely to Port, that its founders were the first English shippers to visit the Douro to buy wine, and that in 1744 they became the first to acquire a property there.
What the visit is like
You do not wait for a guide here. The cellar visit is audio guided in 13 languages, on your own phone through a QR code or on a device, and it runs through more than 300 years of the company’s history at your own pace. The cellar is open daily from 10:00 to 18:15 and the tasting room until 19:30, which makes it a useful late-afternoon stop.
The tasting pours three wines that map neatly onto the main Port styles: Chip Dry, Late Bottled Vintage and the 10 Year Old Tawny. Chip Dry is the one to pay attention to. Taylor’s says it pioneered dry white aperitif Port and first blended Chip Dry in 1934, and it is a useful corrective if you think all Port is sweet.

Taylor’s visit, concierge and product pages show no ticket prices. We would rather tell you that than guess: email [email protected] before you go if the price matters. Taylor’s also offers traditional Vintage Port opening with Port tongs, a heated-tong method used on old bottles whose corks may crumble.
The wines to look for
Beyond the tasting-room trio, Taylor’s lists First Estate Reserve, Select Reserve and a Single Harvest 1975, the latest release in its collection of 50 Year Old Single Harvest Tawnies. At the collector end sit releases such as the 1863 and 1896 Single Harvest wines.
